Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was kidnapped by Hades and forced to become his queen in the underworld.
Demeter’s grief caused the earth to wither, leading Zeus to intervene, resulting in Persephone spending part of the year in the underworld and part on earth.
This cycle explains the seasons: Demeter’s joy when Persephone returns brings spring and summer, while her grief when Persephone departs brings autumn and winter.
